Condemned as a nihilist; a story of escape from Siberia G A 18321902 Henty 9781171610663 Books

This one of the over 50 or so G.A. Henty's novels I have read. One can see I am partial to Mr. Henty's stories and clean writing style. Once you have read a couple of his novels they follow a similar cookie cutter pattern varying only in fictional lead characters negotiating the times and places of significant historical moments centered mainly around the interests of the British Empire.

I hold the novel "Condemned as a Nihilist" as one of Mr. Henty's better works. It is an interesting story that centers around a British lad studying aboard in Russia about the time the communist revolution. The lad gets tangled up with the wrong crowd and is condemned to hard labor in a camp in Siberia. Of course the lad escapes, which is classic Henty. His adventures are fun to read as he traipses across the historical tapestry of the times.

I am quite fond of this book for another reason. In 2004 several hurricanes struck the Southeastern United States. It was about this time that heating oil prices leaped beyond what I could afford as I worked to support my family. I was concerned I wouldn't be able to heat our home, but read this novel that summer and another Henty novel, "Through Russian Snows". The stories inspired me that if people could "live like that" through a harsh winter and survive then we could too. Needless to say my living conditions are quite modern, but I promise you that it was the coldest winter I have been through due to a lack of heating oil. It was a blessing in disguise though having to think outside the box. We felt like liberated consumers, freed from the shackles of the oil companies, as the money we normally would have spent on heating oil was utilized elsewhere.

Hope you enjoy. I have. Read it twice.

I think that this book is positively Awesome!
It is exiting, like all of G A Henty's books.
I would Recommend this anyone.
I quite enjoyed the the story however keep in mind that this is a very old work of fiction and is written in a very "brittish public school boy " style of writing. I found this historically interesting if a little tiresome.
was listed as non fiction but it is fiction. Disappointing. But it is a good read.
Very interesting and easy-to-follow adventure. Descriptions are very good. Philosophy doesn't weigh it down, but makes its point. The hero may win his freedom ... but at what cost?
I enjoyed the adventure of it, the persistence to escape and the details of sufferings and triumph. This is one of my favorite GA Henty books.
A glimpse of Russia and Siberia like no other.
